Hello! My name is Masaya and I am from Kyoto, Japan. I recently revitalized an old storefront. The owners were originally my grandmother and grandfather, who had been running the store for many years as a couple. However, due to the aging of the population, the store was closed.  It is now my own shop, Jazz Vintage Kyoto.

For a few months, the building lay abandoned with remnants of the past, until I decided to revive the space. I took out fixtures of the past, and with the help of a friend, I peeled off the walls and floors, painted and cleaned them. It took about 4 months to change the space into its current form. I was very happy that my friends had fun participating.

I sometimes faced challenges with the renovation but I would overcome them by consulting with friends and craftsmen with specialized knowledge. The shop continues to change even after the interior was completed.

While working, I gained a lot of knowledge and awareness. The building itself was considerably deteriorated and needed reinforcement. The hardest part was the work of pulling out the ceiling. The material was covered in 3 layers, and it had to be peeled off one by one with a crowbar, etc.

The interior design has a combination of focuses. A combination of different organic, industrial, and acoustic materials, as well as leaving behind the remnants of side dishes from the previous shop make up the space. In terms of sound equipment, I have YAMAHA amplifiers and Mitsubishi speakers that can be used for DJs and events

My shop continues to change even after the interior was completed. Jazz Vintage hosts pop-up events, in which display fixtures in the store are changed, various essences added with each community event hosted in the shop.

I want to make this place an experimental space for diversity. At pop-up events, we focus on various creatives active in Kyoto. With each pop up, I host activities that create meetings with this community.

I also have a strong interest in furniture, and I currently run Jazz while also working at a vintage furniture store.

All the furniture in the store is vintage, half of which is from Europe, specifically the 60s to 90s. The other half is Japanese from the 70s to 90s.

Most of the products we handle are clothes.

I have liked clothes since I was young, and as I grew up, I wore various types of clothes to suit my lifestyle. Among them, I only select what I think is really good.

The clothes that I sell in my store were made mostly in Italy, but I do also have some Japanese products from the 70s to 90s.

Currently, we are only open on appointment system and event days, and if you wish to come to the store, please let us know your desired date and time via Instagram dm.

If you're even a little curious, check it out.

It's been a long time, so thank you for reading!
